The Hot Stone Massage combines the therapeutic heat of volcanic basalt stones with gentle massage strokes. The heat penetrates deeply, relaxes the muscles beyond what hands alone can reach and creates a unique feeling of wellbeing. At Harmony Sanctuary® we offer it at our centre in the heart of Málaga.
🔥 What is hot stone massage?
This technique uses smooth basalt stones (a volcanic rock that holds heat for a long time) heated to around 50–55°C. The stones are placed on key points of the body (chakras, spine, palms) and are also actively used as a massage tool, glided over the skin with oil. The deep heat dilates blood vessels, oxygenates tissues, releases deep knots and slows the heart rate, inducing a state of calm that is very hard to achieve with a conventional massage.

✨ Benefits of hot stone massage
- Deep relaxation with an effect comparable to 2 hours of sleep.
- Releases chronic knots that do not respond to pressure alone.
- Improves circulation through sustained vasodilation.
- Eases joint pain in older people or those with mild arthritis.
- Brings stress and anxiety down to very low levels.
- Creates a feeling of lasting wellbeing for several days.
👤 Who is it for?
- People with deep, long-standing chronic knots.
- Anyone who suffers from cold hands and feet or poor peripheral circulation.
- People with mild joint pain such as arthritis or rheumatism.
- Anyone looking for the most relaxing experience on our whole menu.
- As a gift for someone who never lets themselves stop.
🌿 What the session is like at Harmony Sanctuary®
Before we start, we check with you the ideal temperature for the stones (some people prefer them hotter, others less so). We begin by placing stones on your back and under your spine while we work on other areas with oil. Then we actively use the stones as a gliding tool over your back, shoulders, arms and legs.
Standard duration is 60 minutes. The temperature stays constant throughout the session thanks to the professional stone heater. Afterwards, a warm herbal tea and our advice to drink water and rest.

❓ Frequently asked questions
Is it safe? Doesn’t it burn?
Completely safe. The stones are kept at 50–55°C, hot but with no risk of burning. We test them with you before each area.
Can I have it if I have varicose veins or circulation problems?
Generally yes. If you have severe venous insufficiency or grade III varicose veins, check with your doctor first and we will adapt the session to their advice.
Is it a firm or a gentle massage?
Gentle. The heat does the deep work; the manual strokes are medium to gentle. It is a very different experience from the Swedish or the Sports massage.
Does it moisturise the skin?
Yes. We use vegetable oil (a neutral vegetable oil) and your skin is visibly nourished after the session.
How often is it recommended?
Every 3–4 weeks for maintenance. Once a month is the ideal frequency for many people.
